A well broke horse can place his feet wherever he wants them at a full gallop,  he can also place four big feet carefully around tender young toes.  I think that old bay here has purposely stepped on the reins and latigo to forestall the saddling.  He knows he can stop the  whooping and racing that these two have in store for him.  He might even get another can of feed out of the deal.

   Old age and treachery always overcomes youth and energy.
